In general, the distinguishing feature of the banking system in the area is the fact that it covers the whole territory of the province: there are in fact bank counters spread out in all the Communes of the territory, with a prevalence in the most important centres of Massa and Carrara. The number of counters present in the area per credit institutes shows an increase of 24% between 1995 and 2005.

Some indicators:
– Number of Institutes: 20
– The presence of the most important credit institutes nationwide
– The presence of a series of locally founded credit institutes which now have nationwide prestige (e.g., Banca Toscana ->MPS, CR Carrara ->Carige).
