The port area
For the first time in 1983 the port of Marina di Carrara moved over 2 million tons of goods. This increase in traffic reached 3 million in 1989, but the really extraordinary result came during 2000: the movement of 3.4 million of tons was a record and a historical achievement. The last year on record (2004) showed a total flow of a little over 3 million tons.
Port activities consist in the movement of commodities connected with the local economic system (marble and stone, machinery and iron products) but it is showing greater and greater diversification, marking itself out as a logistical system serving a vast national and international area. Stone continues to take up a significant part of the flow through the Port (72%), making Marina di Carrara the sector’s most important stopover in the world, but the fact that Nuovo Pignone has chosen the Port of Marina di Carrara for the transport of its products has given the Apuan docks a dynamic new image.
Carrara Port S.p.a., as the company that manages the port activities in the economic context of the Apuans, is the most important private firm both from the point of view of its workforce (700 employees and about 350 professional staff) and the general turnover.
In the foreseeable future the Port of Marina di Carrara forecasts a continuation of the tendencies already in evidence – an increase in the overall traffic of goods, with an prevalence of goods being loaded over those being unloaded.
At present there is a harbour for pleasure sailing inside the commercial Port, with room for 360 available moorings. Both in the light of the growing demand for pleasure sailing, which has been estimated at about 900 units, and the commercial Port’s need for space, the passing of the new Port Plan, which foresees the full availability of the docks and the construction of a tourist harbour is certain to accelerate the growth of the Apuan industrial and economic system.
